Gallery 372 presents "Crossroads" by Athena Parella. This exhibition is on view June 4th - June 30th, 2017.
In literature, when a character is overwhelmed by a trauma, the coherence of their narrative is temporarily, and potentially permanently shattered. " The traumatized person has 'lost the plot' and a void enters the structure of the narrative" (Viljoen, Beyond the Threshold, 2007). In working through this sort of standstill in the story, the character aims to rewrite their plot for a better outcome. For now, there are only questions with answers too distant to offer comfort. In these moments, we wallow in a purgatory of loneliness, and bewilderment. This surreal feeling of in-betweenness is known as liminal space, the central theme of my series.
