MBIdeas Biomedical Innovation Center
The Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI) is an independent, tax exempt corporation created to support the growth and expansion of biotechnology and medical device companies throughout the Worcester region, enhancing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as the leader in the growth of the medical industry. By creating the right environment for the industry to grow and expand, MBIdeas has become the model for providing incubator space for start-up biomedical companies to fuel economic growth. The MBIdeas Innovation Center assists start-up life science businesses in the following ways currently:
- Completion of two Worcester facilities totaling 28,000 SF of fully outfitted and equipped incubator wet laboratories and support office space
- Formation of 12-15 new companies
- Creation of approximately 65 new jobs
- Investment of new dollars into the Worcester economy by newly created and expanded MBIdeas companies driven by new biomedical technology
- Currently the Worcester county biomedical industry totals 59 companies with an estimated 2,700 employees generating over 300M in revenue
This new life science business is the next generation Innovation Center designed as a highly sophisticated facility with multiple labs and support offices. These early stage Biomed companies meet a science and academic need while in turn creating a new and expanded economic base for the City of Worcester. MBI manages and operates these MBIdeas Innovation and Research facilities which will also continue to "graduate" new companies and create new ones on an ongoing basis. An 18 month evaluation tool has been established to measure the growth of this sector in terms of numbers of jobs, square footage occupied, and investment dollars raised and spent within the economy.
