BANDITS & HEROES, POETS & SAINTS explores the ways that ancient cultures of Africa blended with indigenous and colonial Portuguese traditions for more than five hundred years to form the vibrant cultural mosaic of modern Brazil. These diverse cultures have contributed to the resilience and vitality of the people of the Northeast of Brazil. Their inventive works of popular art-sculptures, paintings, prints, religious objects, toys and booklets of poetry-draw visitors into the complex culture of the Northeast, the economically poorest region of Brazil but one with a rich cultural heritage. The art in this exhibition is known as popular art. "Popular art" refers to art made by ordinary people working within their communities to retell familiar stories about the places they live and the traditions and beliefs they share. Popular artists help their communities to celebrate, to remember, and to laugh at the things that make their lives challenging and joyful.
